Once upon a time. Happily ever after. Such are the classic promises of fairy tales. Yet in Texas we find a twist to the familiar storyline. In If the Devil Had a Wife, there is still the battle of Good vs. Evil, a beautiful maiden, a wealthy suitor, a kingdom of riches and the wicked witch, but any similarity with Cinderella and Snow White ends there. With the help of her life partner and an attorney (always necessary in these modern times), Nelda Stark executes a devious plan that elevates fraud and theft to a new high. A massive coverup reaches into the Texas Attorney General's Office, stealing from not only the Stark family, but the federal and state governments.

If the Devil Had a Wife (Audible Audio Edition) Frank Mills AT Chandler Roslyn Group LLC Books Reviews
***Intriguing***. ((My grandmother had an old saying about the devil's wife. ))
Based in Texas, based on a true story. Very interesting - I loved the history and the details. The ending caught me by surprise.
I was looking for a good book to read when my sister suggested this one. She was right. This is an awesome story. The fact that I had lived in Orange, Texas for 12 years made it even more personal for me. I have met the author and found her to be delightful, soft spoken, and well educated. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting her. If you are looking for a good book, I mean, a really good book, that you won't want to put down, you need to read this one. When I finished the book, I really wanted to read a sequel. Well I understand a second book is coming soon. So read this one first. I loved it. This is one of those books you can easily read more than once.
I purchased my copy of The Devil Had a Wife for my from and have since ordered two copies to give as gifts.
This book grabbed my attention from the first Chapter. Since I live in Orange and was familiar with some of the people and places discussed in this book, it made it even more interesting.
Over the years, I had heard 'rumors' about the Stark Family but the facts in this book just made it all more interesting. I had personally met the Stark twins (Bill and Homer) and had seen Nelda around town many times. I always kind of felt sorry for someone who could not even go to the theater or grocery store without guards. Maybe, after reading this book, I understand better why she may have needed them.
I have taken two tours of the Old Stark House and find it fascinating. My first tour of the beautiful old home was given by the gentleman who actually did the renovating himself. All in all, this book was great. Makes me reaslize that sometimes, the lack of wealth could be a good thing!!
This book was very well written, but it contained many technical references that were difficult for someone with little business knowledge to follow. The whole story of corruption is very upsetting, and I found myself rooting for this family battling the big machine. This read wasn't particularly enjoyable because it was, as stated in my review title, aggravating. But four stars are awarded for the fine writing and dedication to telling this highly complicated story.
What a wonderful tale, written after years of research! I am quite sure that there are a number of Stark Foundation lackeys, that would not give this book 1 star. haha.
I grew up very close the the members of one of the non-blood-related, but pivotal, families in this book and am amazed at what has been revealed. Shocked and dismayed, too. Ms. Nugent must be commended for her tenacity and incredible research (sleuthing) to get to the bottom of what happened to her family's fortunes. I read this on and was put off by the typographical errors, but it did not stop me from reading the book in one sitting. The fraud (not to mention more horrifying actions) perpetrated with tacit approval from judges and state officials is mind-boggling. I found the ending a little confusing, however.
A very interesting read!! After reading it, I made a trip to Orange, Texas to see the sights mentioned in the book. Orange is beautiful and historic and was really worth the trip. Do not miss the house and the Presbyterian CHURCH. I really, really, REALLY wanted Nelda and Eunice to get theirs, but you can't have everything!! If you like some history with your mystery, here you go!!
As an avid reader, I didn't know what to expect from this book.
