It's the fall of 1965 when 28-year-old Sister Francesca leaves her small town convent in upstate New York to study theology at a large university in the Bronx. She expects to face demanding professors and challenging classes; she doesn't expect to become entangled in the controversies surrounding Vatican II. What she least expects is involvement in the mysterious death of her new Superior, Mother Ignatius. Was the old woman a victim of greedy neighborhood businessmen? Or was she simply in the way of unstoppable changes in the Church? In the process of investigating her Superior's murder, Sister Francesca risks her life and must come to terms with the changing world around her, a challenge to both her faith and her vows.

Killer in the Cloister A Sister Francesca Mystery Sister Francesca Mysteries Book 1 eBook Camille Minichino Margaret Grace Jean Flowers Ada Madison Richard Rufer Jan Hagan

Camille Minichino uses her real name as author of a new series of mysteries. Scientist Gloria Lamorino of the Periodic Mysteries, the doll house making grandmother of "Margaret Grace's" Miniature Mysteries, and "Ada Madison's" Professor Sophie Knowles are now joined by Sister Francesca of the Mary Immaculate order currently enrolled in graduate studies at the Bronx, NY college, St. Albans. A Religious Traditionalist and Conservative, Sister finds the big-city tempo challenging, but not so much as the worldly passions of the era and the burgeoning effects of Vatican reforms. The result is not only a clever murder mystery but a close peek inside the Roman church and the impact of change on its clerical staff. Instructors often tell students "write what you know." Minichino proves the correctness of that advice. The reader can detect glimpses of perhaps the author's own experiences and thoughts behind the fictional veil of Sister Francesca. This is a highly recommended read on so many levels.

Killer in the Cloister A Sister Francesca Mystery Sister Francesca Mysteries Book 1 eBook Camille Minichino Margaret Grace Jean Flowers Ada Madison Richard Rufer Jan Hagan Reviews

Sister Francesca moves from a very sheltered and prayerful life in her motherhouse to graduate school in the Bronx just at the time that Vatican II is changing things in the Catholic Church. The background to this story includes the movement to the more open life and reduced requirements of a graduate school student while the Church is also moving on to new things and a new liturgy.

In spite of all of these changes, Sister Francesca has a feeling that the death of Mother Ignatius was not from natural causes. She takes it upon herself to investigate and involve others. The story is fascinating, enjoyable, and a credit to the author, Camille Minichino, for working with a nun for a main character instead of the usual secular sleuths.

At this point I am on my knees praying that this will start of new series that many readers are looking for. I went though the marvelous Sister Mary Helen Mysteries by Sister Carol Ann O’Marie and enjoyed every one of them. Then I found the Sister Agatha mysteries by Aimée and David Thurlo. Now I am anxious to see whether the author will take up the challenge and produce a series of books with Sister Francesca active in solving mysteries.
I am delighted to see that Killer in the Cloister is the first of a new series from Camille Minichino. It isn't described that way on the cover, but to her fans, of which I am one, this will be very welcome news. I hope it doesn't mean that the series in which mathematician Sophie Knowles is the protagonist will not continue; I love that one too.

Minichino is a superb writer, who includes just enough description to give a clear idea of the setting, and she has a fine understanding of character portrayal. This is a book whose subject and events linger in one's mind after reading it. In the "action" scenes that involve the two main characters (both of whom are nuns), I was literally on pins and needles wondering what would happen. The events seem so much more suspenseful than if the principal characters were the usual ones from cozy mysteries. I loved the setting, the characters, and the plot, which was expertly designed and carried out. I look forward to a great new series.
Disclaimer I know the author.

Minichino makes a great choice for this mystery set in the world of nuns in the mid-1960s. Her POV character, a feisty young nun who strongly believes in traditional ways, struggles with the changes happening inside her church and out. This book wasn't at all revisionist--it was eye-opening to read about the rules that religious orders had then, and the effect on everyone as those rules began to change under the pressure of very changeable times. You can feel what wearing a habit was like, what a vow of poverty really means--finally I understand the phrase "poverty of spirit," and understand a little better the pros and cons of religious life.

I love Sister Francesca, and learned so much from reading this book--all while enjoying a very fun mystery. Finally, I guessed who the killer was right when I was supposed to, and for the right reason! Minichino's sense of humanity, of justice, and her clear eye for how people really are all make this a fabulous read!
I love Ms Minichino's books in all her manifestations, especially the Sophie Knowles series, but Sister Francesca won a significant place in my heart and I am not even Catholic. The author takes a conservative nun into an era of vast social change, even in the Church, and, with compassion, shows her struggles. Sister Francesca has a true calling and finds comfort in tradition, but she owns a good heart and a fine mind. She slowly opens her eyes, looks around, and questions, then finds merit in some of the sea changes around her. Oh, and she pursues justice to the end in a murder despite much resistence from those she is expected to obey without question. She is a very appealing three-dimensional character. Of course I would love to hear more from her, but I am also delighted that the author did not take her development too far in this book. That is the mark of a true craftsman.
I like this author's writing. These are not fast-paced cliff hangers, but move along at a stately pace with lots of interesting characters and descriptions of life styles that are new to me. This cozy has an intellectual bent and I am constantly amused by Francesca's introspection, trying to balance her natural curiosity with what she has been taught as appropriate subservience for a nun. She is continually breaking into the former, thank heavens, and feeling a little angst about the latter, which I am quite sure she must resolve at some point, or perhaps in a later novel in the series. The descriptions feel so real that I wondered if the author had been a nun at some point. This is low key but thoroughly enjoyable reading and I look forward to more.
